Is it Possible to Remove Colour Tattoos?
Removing a colour tattoo is more complex than simply pointing a laser at it. The science behind why certain colours respond differently is worth understanding before you book.

How Different Colours Respond to Laser Treatment
Understanding how each colour behaves helps set realistic expectations before treatment begins.
Black and dark blue ink respond fastest and most completely to laser removal. These pigments absorb laser energy readily and typically reach the highest levels of clearance within a standard course of treatment.
Red ink responds well to specific wavelengths, particularly 532nm, and can clear to a high degree when the correct settings are used. Some clients with sensitive skin experience a stronger inflammatory response to red ink removal, so pacing is important.
Green and light blue are among the most resistant colours to remove. They reflect many of the wavelengths that black and red absorb readily, which is why older nanosecond laser systems often struggle with these pigments. Pico laser technology is significantly more effective on green and teal inks because the photoacoustic mechanism works on the physical structure of the particle rather than relying purely on thermal absorption.
Yellow and white inks are the most challenging of all. Yellow reflects most visible laser wavelengths and requires very precise targeting. White ink can paradoxically darken temporarily when treated with certain lasers before it begins to fade. Both colours require experienced clinical judgement rather than a standardised approach.
Purple, orange, and brown inks sit in the middle range. They can be cleared effectively but tend to require more sessions than darker colours.
Why Pico Laser Gives Better Results on Coloured Tattoos
The photoacoustic shockwave that Pico lasers generate shatters ink particles into significantly smaller fragments than older Q-switched nanosecond lasers. Smaller particles are cleared faster and more completely by the immune system, regardless of colour.
For colour tattoos specifically, this matters because resistant pigments like green, yellow, and light blue that absorb laser energy poorly still respond to the mechanical force of the photoacoustic effect. Pico lasers also allow practitioners to switch between wavelengths within a single session, targeting different colours in one visit rather than requiring separate sessions for each pigment group.
The result across a course of treatment is faster overall clearance, better outcomes on colours that older technology handles poorly, and a lower risk of skin damage from repeated thermal exposure.
How Many Sessions Does Colour Tattoo Removal Take
A realistic estimate for a multi-coloured tattoo is eight to fifteen sessions, spaced six to eight weeks apart. This range accounts for the variation in how different colours respond, the density and age of the ink, the placement of the tattoo, and how efficiently the individual's immune system clears the fragmented pigment between sessions.
Black and dark elements within a colour tattoo will typically clear faster than the lighter colours. It is common for a multi-coloured piece to reach a point where the dark ink has largely faded while yellow or green sections still require further sessions. Your treatment plan should account for this and be adjusted as the course progresses.
Older colour tattoos generally respond faster than recent ones. Ink that has been in the skin for several years has already begun to break down naturally, and the particles are often less dense than freshly applied ink.
What to Expect at Your Colour Tattoo Removal Consultation
A thorough consultation is particularly important for colour tattoos because of the additional complexity involved. The assessment should cover each colour present in the tattoo and how it is likely to respond, the wavelengths available with the laser being used and whether they cover the full range of pigments in your piece, your Fitzpatrick skin type and how it affects the settings appropriate for your treatment, a realistic session estimate that accounts for the most resistant colours rather than the easiest ones, and an honest discussion of whether complete clearance is achievable or whether some residual fading is the more likely outcome for specific pigments.
Any clinic that quotes you a flat number of sessions for a complex multi-coloured tattoo without assessing each colour individually is not approaching your treatment with the precision it requires.
Colour Tattoo Fading Before a Cover-Up
Not everyone seeking colour tattoo removal wants the piece completely gone. Fading a colour tattoo before a cover-up is one of the most practical uses of laser treatment, and it is often more achievable than full clearance of every pigment.
Reducing the saturation of the existing colours, even partially, opens up significantly more design options for the covering artist. A heavily saturated green or yellow section is one of the most limiting factors a tattoo artist faces when planning a cover-up. Even two or three removal sessions can make the difference between a cover-up that has to work around the original design and one that has genuine creative freedom.
If a cover-up is your goal, discuss this at your consultation. The target level of fading, the number of sessions needed, and the timeline will be planned differently from a full removal course.
